Essay: Should Canada bring back the death penalty?

These days there are many kidnappings and killings. Some people say that the criminals who commit these crimes should be put to death. Other people say that the criminals should be rehabilitated and given one more chance. I agree with the group which proposes that we should execute criminals who mercilessly and brutally murder innocent people. However, killers who have a serious mental problem should not get the death penalty. In 1976 Canada got rid of capital punishment. This essay argues that Canada should bring it back.

Everybody gets just one life, one chance to live. So, when criminals take away someone’s life and cut off his or her bright future, they should be punished by death. Families are devastated when someone close is brutally murdered. It is not fair to them that the killers should be able to live when their loved ones were not given the chance to live. In order for these families to get justice, the murderers must pay with their own lives.

In addition, if murderers do not receive the death penalty, they will probably kill again when they are released from prison. Even when they say that they have changed and promise never to commit a crime again, they cannot be trusted. Furthermore, no respectable person wants to be near them. Canada’s most infamous mass killer, Clifford Olson, went to prison several times, but he also got out from prison several times because he promised that he would not commit crimes again. But, as soon as he got out from prison, he did other crimes. Killers cannot be believed or trusted and, for the protection of society, do not deserve to live.

It is also unfair that taxpayers are supporting convicted murderers in prison. Because Canada does not have the death penalty, the government has to pay for the care and protection of the prisoners while they are locked up. The cost of caring for a prisoner is very high and the government uses people’s taxes to pay for this. Most Canadians are against giving money or taxes to support the criminals who may have brutally killed innocent people.

Clearly, is not fair that vicious criminals are living comfortably in prison while the families of the victims are still suffering and missing their loved ones. It is unjust that criminals who cut off people’s future and life should be allowed to live, and, what is even more unjust, that taxpayers are paying all their expenses. For these reasons, Canada should bring back the death penalty.
